Can't give a real answer but I have an 80 gallon DT with 30 gallon sump with 50 gallon as a Refugium.

I have a 40g breeder. My sump is 20g and the refugium is 1/3 of it. I really don't know if it's big enough to actually be beneficial. I can grow a decent amount of anything though. Thinking about putting some chaeto and mangroves in it.

Every last bit of my experience says that your refugium should be somewhat bigger than your display tank. True story.
Of course, this usually isn't an option. In otherwords, big. Real big. Just as big as you can make it and still pass the WAF.

As big as you can get. More water more stability.

That's the biggest hurdle.

How does one know if your macroalgae has gone asexual? I have different forms of macros in my 5g sump and for some reason cannot grow chaeto. Also saw someone keeping their lights on 24/7, said it prevents them going asexual. Is this true? And will that not affect pH?

NO lights on 24-7 will not prevent it from going asexual. Keeping the lights on the Fuge 24-7 will keep the PH from bouncing and keep it more stable. You'll know when it does go asexual, as it will start growing in your DT, but algae eating fish and snails will polish it off if you have enough of them. I to have an issue with Cheato not growing in my Sump. Who woulda thought Cheato is finicky. But, I do have Halameda and Caulerpa that grows pretty good.

I have crazy growth of codium and blue ochtodes. No luck with red caulerpa or chaeto.
