I need advice on how to extract a wrasse from a built-in overflow (Marineland Deep Dimension corner).

He is sick, all signs point to swim bladder. I was trying to catch so I could QT, and he jumped out of the water, over the net, bounced off of my mesh top, and banked himself perfectly through the 1/4" space between the top and the overflow teeth...because the fish Gods hate me.

I have the typical Durso plumbing in the way, so nets and other tools are not an option. So let's hear it. How would you rescue him?

Oh no, I'm so sorry.

Yeah. He was sick anyway, but it would've been nice to attempt to QT. I didn't glue the durso. I bought this setup as a store display that never saw water, however they did plumb it.

There is ZERO room to get anything in there with the pipes. I was able to fit a 1.25" pipe hose in to siphon...to no avail.

I remove my pipes and drain the overflow when my goby jumped. You can try fitting a small net down there and kinda scaring the fish into it.

I was thinking shopvac.

That would definitely kill an injured fish. Not sure if it would work but I used one of these to fish a Diamond Watchman Goby out of my corner overflow:

With the long handle and narrow width net it makes it much easier to fit in a tighter space and get a fish out. I have found it indispensable for many other applications as well (ie removing excess snail shells from the bottom of my tank, flipping snails over).

Sorry about the fish

For anyone who might come in here for info...
If pipe is glued unscrew bulkhead keeping downward pressure. Have a pump with hose attached at the ready. Pull up bulkhead, if the water in overflow doesn’t flush em out use pump with hose to wash him down the hole.

Sorry about your fish. Might be a good idea to make a mesh cover to keep any more fish from getting into the overflow.
