So which black box lights do you guys recommend now a days? I have a 40gal breeder and I just want to grow lps and soft corals.

I've been using different brands since 2013. Manufacturers come and go. First I used taotronics, then galaxyhydro, and now this brand. They have always lasted a long time but you have to clean the fan blades, heat sink, and vents when they get dusty. The failures I have had were all from overheating due to my neglect of maintenance. I would definitely reccomend a par meter as well, they can easily fry your corals.

Except you might want two of them for coverage of a 40B tank. You can get away with one, but you'll need to raise it quite bit to get full coverage on a 36" tank. The optics on the black boxes tend to be stupidly narrow.
Or just pull the optics off.

I would go with the 30" Vipar Spectra. The Vipar is well made compared to the others and cranks good PAR out. A single 30" fixture will give you nice coverage on that size tank.
+1

Vipar Spectra or Mars aqua, those are the two black boxes most people are familiar with.
