Hello, everyone! I am very new to salt water tanks, and after many years of freshwater tanks, decided to switch to salt water. I am loving every second and being new decided to start with the Red Sea Max 250. I have some questions for anyone who is willing to assist. Very apprecciated!

So I am going on week 6, and while I know I somewhat rushed adding fish, and coral, all water paramaters were looking good, and everything seems to be growing good/and healty.

I went thru about a week of green hair algae around week 2,whic was annoying at first, and then as part of the tank cycle went away. Currently I have some red slime on the sand, which doesnt seem to go away fully, however is easily managed at Water changes/cleanings/Turbo snails.

Corals I have added are doing good, the button is growing exceptionally good. My 4 Osc. Clowns are lowing life and never leave my Mignificgant anemone, except for feedings.

Current tank has 4 osc clowns, 1 blue hippo tang (baby small about 1"),1 Flame angel, 1 yellow tang, 1 scopis tank, 6 Turbo snails, 2 large cleaner shrimp, 1 yellow tang, 1 magnificgant anemone, 1 long tenticale anemone, 1 bubble tip anemone. For the corals: Cany cane, sunflower, button, bi-color frogspon, and greens bird nest frag. 55lbs live rock

So everything was going great except.....I had a 2nd baby blue hippo (1")which swam his way past the skimmer, seriously injuring himself, and died within 24hrs, in QT. Also I had a kole tang, which died, which I could never get to eat anything ever. It would peck at rocks the whole 3 weeks I had him, and refuse to eat. I have algae sheets/brine shrimp cubes/garlic. i never saw the fish eat once, which I assumed was partially why he died. My last dose of horrible news is I had a baby 2" porcupine puffer, which ate the tail of my only blue hippo that I currently have left, so I had to return the puff........The good news is the hippo seems to be doing fine recovering for 2 weeks now. I feel horrible, and the blue hippo is my fav in tank.

My experience with Garlic has been terrible, If I add 1 drop to a frozen cube, and allow soak, and then add to the tank all my fish hate it completely, so I gave up using any garlic.

I have also bought a RO Filter, and have a DI add on the way (which I bought it all in one - all at once)

Also, I want to say I love the Red Sea Max 250, however this protein skimmer is crap, and the fine tune adjustments are really annoying. Also these bulbs run ridiculously hot. Not sure what the average person spends on there setup, I am currently at about 4k (tank, stand, fish, supplies, etc)

Here are my questions:

1) There are about 7 "baby snails"? crawling on the glass. i have no idea what these are. Baby TB snails or did they come from the live rock? They are extremly small, white/clear, and there main body kind of moves like a suction cup. Do I have baby snails already?..or what are these? (I attached a pic) Only appearred recently.

2) My anemones do eat, however this is an incredibile struggle,.....the cleaner shrimp are always stealing their food. Even if I try distracing them with there own food to eat. Apparrently my cleaner shrimp do not get stung by my anenomes. Also my anemones barely go after raw shrimp. Any ideas? I was thinking of trying out crap meat.

3) My setup is in my basement, and these hot bulbs started making my tank run at 81-83.5 during the day with the lights on (Mid-summer), and at night with blue moon LEDs runs around 80.5-81. I see many different opinions on idea water temp for different fish. Seems to me best is 79-80 all the time. Should I make the move for a chiller?

4) Add a UV sterilizer?

I realize my hippo will need a bigger tank one day. Thanks for any help!!!!!

Welcome to Reef2Reef!

I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding answers here. I'd love to help more, but I'm off to vacation in a few hours so I really need to go pack . . . LOL

Anyways, you are not the first to find your Red Sea Max runs a little warm. The directions say that the tank needs to be in a room away from sunlight with a constant temperature of 72 degrees F so if your room is getting any hotter than that than you will probably need to buy a chiller. Fortunately there are many good choices and the Red Sea Max was designed to make the addition of an inline chiller quite simple.

My only other thought is to read my article this month in ReefHobbyistMagazine.com about anemones. For a tank of your size, age, and expertise level I do not feel that having those three different kinds of anemones is a wise choice. I would rather see you focus on one anemone at a time, but that is definitely a matter of one guy's opinion.

As to your snails it is impossible to identify given the photo above, and could be one of many many different varieties, but no matter I wouldn't be too concerned as you are likely to see more "blooms" of pods, algae, and other strange growths during the first several months.

Finally, the sad truth regarding Hippo tangs is that the vast majority do not fair well in smaller and newer tanks. They are so beautiful and cute most folks can't resist, but my advice is if yours doesn't make it try to avoid running out and replacing it. They are wild caught and we as aquarists are killing way too many by selling them into newer smaller tanks. Again, this is one dude's opinion, and we're talking about a hobby here so I hope you understand, I'm really just trying to help!

Anyways, like I said welcome to R2R and how about a Full Tank Shot (FTS)!
