Hey guys!

Just wanted to run my current plans for my plumbing by you guys to see if there's any place I can improve before placing my order with BRS (with 10% off today, woot woot!). To explain my situation, my current tank is a 60g cube with a 15 gallon (10 gallon when filled normally) sump and has a pre-drilled in-tank overflow that extends from the top of the tank to the bottom, and is rather small. I'm converting the 1" durso drain to a 1" herbie with 1.25" emergency. My plumbing pipe diameters have been chosen to specifically fit the open area at the bottom of the overflow in my tank, with new/larger holes being drilled. For instance, I would love if the 1/2" return could be larger diameter, but there's no way I could fit it in there without some sort of serious overhaul of the tank. My return is my biggest concern as there's a lot of reducing, so any advice there would be especially appreciated. Let me know if there's anything that jumps out to you that should be fixed! The order listed is the order in which the water will flow, with some areas simplified (such as technical threaded vs slip fittings as well as adapters).

Drain:
1" Strainer cap
1" Pipe
1" Bulkhead
1" Pipe
1" Union
1" Gate valve (most likely as opposed to ball valve)
1" Union
1" Pipe
1" 45 degree elbow
1" Spigot x barb fitting
1" vinyl tubing (clamped)
Into the filter sock

Emergency
1.25" Pipe (uncovered)
1.25" Pipe
1.25" Bulkhead
1.25" Pipe
1.25" Union
1.25" Pipe
1.25" 45 degree elbow
1.25" Spigot x barb fitting
1.25" Vinyl Tubing (clamped)
Into the Refugium

Return
Fluval SP2 Pump (strainer necessary or is uncovered ok?)
1" Barbed adapter
1" Vinyl tubing (clamped)
1" Barb x spigot adapter
1" Union
1" to 1/2" reducing bushing, slip x thread
1/2" Threaded male pipe adapter
1/2" Pipe
1/2" 45 degree elbow
1/2" pipe
1/2" Cepex ball valve (with unions)
1/2" pipe
1/2" Bulkhead
1/2" Pipe
1/2" 45 degree elbow (to avoid blocking strainer)
1/2" Pipe
1/2" 45 degree elbow (to avoid blocking strainer)
1/2" Pipe
1/2" 90 degree elbow
1/2" Bulkhead
1/2" Return nozzle
Into the Display

Hopefully this makes sense! My main worry is that I'll be reducing the 1" output of the pump to 1/2" by the time it gets to the tank, but I'm not sure if this will cause any real problems besides added pressure in the plumbing (I'm assuming clamps on the barbed fittings should be enough?). Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks for reading :)

Looks fine. You're going to loose flow due to a substantial amount of head pressure on your pump, but it should be sufficient. As long as you're turning over the tank 3/4 times per hour, it'll be OK. I use a Herbie style drain with an external return on my 60 cube, it's worked well for me. I'm running an Iwaki return pump, probably 600 gph, along with a Gyre 13o to help with flow.

Some sort of strainer on the return pump, or at least a flow through sponge or something on the way to the return pump, is a good idea. Keep snails and such from jamming up the works.
