About 5 hours ago I bought some sun coral. It caught my eye because the stem was a gorgeous blend of red, orange, and peach. Right now it only has a single but rather large head. I was told they weren't photosynthetic and disliked sun, so I prepared a shady spot for it under a rock. I haven't seen it open yet, but I'd appreciate advice about feeding it for when it does, or anything else you'd deem helpful. Thank you.

They still need good flow especially since they rely on prey capture and they can't go get their food. I put them in a dark corner of my tank that gets a stream of good flow. They seem to respond to the water movement and they always open for me on day one. The trick is to catch them open with a camera in your hand.

Nice coral, if your filtration can handle it, get a fish feeder like the one in the picture. Set it to go off every 4 hours, add reef roids or similar. Fine powdery foods best. any freeze dry fish food also, like mysis shrimp. Or you will need to relocate coral and use a plastic bottle(cut bottom) and target feed it. 4 times a day at least if not as many times as you can. Very hardy coral.

Sun corals are not such hard for keeping I have yellow, orange, and black for 2 years, you can keep them on dark place or with light, good flow is recommended, you should try to feed them directly with turkey baster, frozen meaty food is perfect like mysis, cyclops, fish eggs etc. It takes some time to to teach them open during a day especially orange and yellow one, once they smell food in water they start to open, only black branching form never opens during day.
