I want to get a wavemaker and am seeking advice on the best bang for the buck. I don't have $1000 to lay down on a set of Vortechs so I'm looking at what are my alternatives. I've seen a tank in person with the Tunze wavebox and was impressed. WOuld this be the way to go? WIll the help with flow in the tank? In other words could it replace my two MaxiJets 1200 with the Sure Mods?

The best bang is the MaxiJets 1200 with
the Sure Mods on a cheap wavemaker.

I have the expensive controlled Tunze pumps.

Yes they are nice but, I could have done the same thing for
alot cheaper with cheaper pumps and a simple wavemaker.

Hindsight is 20/20

I have to disagree with you. I have a Red Sea WaveMaker and two Maxi-Jets 1200 with the sure mods and they are always getting stuck. The powerheads were not meant to be turned off and on like that unless they are designed to like the Koralais (sp?). I do have a 1200 without the Sure MOd on it and it seems to be doing ok, the ones with the Mods keep getting stuck. I did hear there is a wavemaker / power switcher that doesn't fully turn the power off on the outlet but rather reduces the flow so the powerhead doesn't completely turn off. DOn't know the brand though.

I have a closed loop with two Dart pumps powering it and a Snapper return pump from the sump. I am getting between 3/4 and 1" wave on a 8' tank with the box.

Tunze what? WAveBox or just the powerheads with the controller?

With the price of one Tunze I can get the two Koralai with the controller right? Is there that much difference in performance?

I personally do not like the looks of the Koralai,
so since I will see them I prefer the Tunze.

I would look at the amount of flow and number
of pumps and chooses accordingly.

I run:
2 Tunze Turbelle NanoStream 6055 Pumps
2 Tunze Turbelle Stream 2, 6105 Pumps

I had the nanos from another tank
so I put them in my 180 to fill in.

The controllables arenice but you can do the
same thing for less with the non-controllables.

You can use a cheap controller (on off type)
over an expensive full featured one.

Though I have the controllables but that is basically all I'm doing,

I've tried it all different ways and the simple
"one side on full the other off, then switch"
seems the best.

I have a red sea Wavemaker pro but I have Maxi-Jets 1200 on it with the Sure-Mods which produce 2200 GPH each but the keep getting stuck with wavemaker wich is basically doing what you're saying turning an outlet on then the other off etc. The Maxi Jets don't like that setup because from what I've heard they spin a different direction each time they are turned on. Tunze's don't do that? They're not getting stuck for you?
