Advice / Suggestions for Red Sea Max E 170 Sump

I'm working on my first saltwater aquarium, and I know I'm going to need some advice here and there. So here is my first question to the Reef2Reef Community.

I just got a Red Sea Max E 170, and I want to put a sump and refugium in the cabinet. I know Red Sea makes a sump kit, and others have modified their ATOs into some kind of refugium... but I'm not sure Red Sea's "upgrade" kit is really worth the money.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for a different solution, advice, or suggestion for a sump. I have been considering the Trigger Systems Crystal 18, wishing I could fit a Ruby 20, but I'm not sure. Maybe there is something better or better suited for my cabinet and setup.

The E-170 is the AIO model, right? They have a really nice setup. All good back there, really, you will see very little benefit other than a little more water volume adding one of those expensive sumps. I would just add a tank for an ATO in the cabinet personally.

The E-170 is the AIO model, and yes the sump (so far) does a really good job. I was looking for a bit more control and the addition of a refugium. I haven't decided what to do about an ATO yet, even though I know I'll need once, especially since the unit is open.
