Hello R2R,
I had to go away on military business, so my wife was left to care for the tank. To give you some background on her, she couldn't care either way about the hobby, fish, or the tank I have, all she knows is to feed them while I'm gone. Anyway, before leaving I did a small water change and made sure she had a big enough supply of food to get her through while I was gone. I also turned off my protein skimmer to make things easier for her. Unfortunately, my diamond goby passed away while I was gone, and was eaten by the hermits. I do not see a trace of him in the tank, but I'm certain there was a shock to my parameters.
Now I have a lovely diatom and cyano outbreak starting as I got back. My plan to combat things is to do a pretty heafty water change, cut my lighting down, reinforce my cleaning crew, and give the tank a good cleaning. My other fish seem very happy and healthy thankfully, and luckily the diamond goby was the cheapest fish. What other things can you guys suggest to help get in front of this? I do not want to dump a bunch of chemicals or buy a lot of extras, the whole reason my tank has been good so far is my staying out of it and keeping things minimal. I've attached pictures of it's current status for reference.
Tank specs (tank age: 1y 9m 27d):
40G Cvue AIO
2x Intank baskets running marine pure, seachem denitrate, and 1 50g chemi pure elite
2x AI Prime Sol lights
1x AI nero 3
1x AI nero 5
live rock and sand
Main Livestock: 2 Black snowflake clowns, 1 melanurus wrasse, 1 Potter's angel, and 6 Rose Bubble Tip anemones that started as 2.
Cheers,
Alex
