What advise were you given in this hobby that seemed odd but ended up being the best advice after all ??

For me looking way back, was to take things slow and do not chase numbers.

Definitely was to not chase numbers for me as well. Goes against everything you read and hear, but is absolutely true.

Lots of good advice on here, but most of it made sense to me. The one that seemed odd that really sticks out in my mind was: Don't overreact to the various diatoms/algae in the early phases. Wait it out and let them do their thing.

Weirdest thing? Pouring vodka in my tank! Worked like a charm.

LFS owner (though he doesn't deal in saltwater anymore) still maintains a lot of tanks locally and while I was shadowing him the best advice I ever heard is "If you Think its dead, just leave it until you Know its dead. Life finds a way" and I never cease to crack up when he comes back around to a previously suspected to be melted/bleached coral or spineless urchin and suddenly its showing life 2 or 3 weeks later, finding its way.

A quarter of the time though it was really dead, in which his typical response is "At least the crabs ate well"
