Advise needed,Question on flow???

I have a 40 breeder as well and run a vortech on it. It will take care of detritus build up, but not a diatom bloom. I get diatom blooms now and again in my tank as well. Typically its a nutrient and clean up crew issue for that. In a new tank like yours it is to be expected IMO. I get them when I get lazy or change somethin I shouldn't have :). I think that if you skim heavy and add some nassarius snails to the CC you should see a difference in the diatoms. Hope that helps.

Do you have any pics of your 40 breeder?

Went to the lfs and got 4 Nassarius snails , and 2 big turbo snails today. I'll give it a few days to see what happens.

Personally I don't see changing pumps being a cost effective resolution, algae and detritus is normal and you can't really "avoid" it. Best to find critters that will consume it/process it/move it. (but I do think the MP pumps should be on your wishlist...I just started using them and love them).

I like the addition of nassarius to stir the bed. I also think cerith snails eat diatoms and detritus, so they may be a good choice as well.

I personally like having a sand bed and rocks full of critters that eat detritus/algae and I think that mini brittlestars and amphipods do a great job of it.

Also, vacuum the bed if you don't already.

At this point I'd toss a filter sock in the sump and stir the sandbed up with a turkey baster or something like that to try to suspend some of the junk and have it caught by the sock. GFO/GFH and maybe some carbon would help.
