Well.....as careful as I have been, inspecting, dipping, quarantine, it has happened. I discovered that I have AEFW in several of my corals. The problem that many of us have is most of my corals are heavily encrusted.

I have an island type setup with each island mortared into one solid form that can easily be removed with the corals intact. I am wondering if I can remove each island with the corals attached and dip Bayer, rinse and return to my display. This would be the easiest way without having to frag off each acro and basically start over. What say you...doable without nuking my entire system?

Thanks reefers,
Mark

I planned on 4 dips 5 to 7 days apart. Sure would make life easier on me and my corals. All it really costs is saltwater. My only concern is that the rocks will absorb the Bayer. Still thinking........

Bayer is oily and not easy to get off. It is specifically designed that way to stay on surfaces through rain. I think Coral RX would be a safer choice. You are going to have serious die off inside the rocks regardless of the direction you go. It is risky but if it is your only option then go for it.

if you take that route keep a close eye as you may have a mini cycle from die off and loss bacteria from the dipped rocks and run a good amount of carbon to help get any lingering chemical out the tank that make its way back from the tank ,also make sure you get a magnified glass to find the eggs and scrap off usually at the base of the acro's but check it all good

I successfully treated my 325 Gallon just a few weeks ago with Sentinel spectrum for dogs. I lost my amphipods and copepods, but within 2 weeks I was able to reseed the population and they are all back - corals all seem to be rebounding very nicely and I did not lose a single coral or fish...!

is this a secret in take treatment for aefw?

Following,im having the same problem with aefw and heavily encrusted acros.....would be nice to know a little more about this sentinel dogworm treatment!!

What was your dosage rate?

Sentinel is for red bugs not aefw

MatteZ - the active ingredient praziquantel is an anthelmintic which means it is effective against flatworms. Pretty sure I know what I am talking about (you can look me up on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=11831942).

I dose the 50 - 100 pound dog version for my 325 in two doses one week apart. I dissolve in about 2 cups of aquarium water. And add to sump. I leave skimmer off for the 2 weeks while "treating". It does indeed get rid of red bugs and flatworms. I am just speaking from my experiences.

Best of luck.

Todd

So there is no confusion about MY dosing regimen - I dose a WHOLE chewable for 50 to 100 pound dogs (23mg Milbemycin oxime, 460mg lufenuron, and 228mg praziquantel) once and a week later dose another whole chewable (it's beef flavored)...

I don't know, because I'm not familiar with this treatment but I doubt he was using a chewable sentinel....... I'd hold off on using that for sure!

I think you're better off saving some frags and starting over. Don't save any plugs, rock or any bare sps skeleton. If you frag then dip in Bayer you won't transfer any eggs. Anything with an acro on it or near it just dry it out and recycle the rock later. I went through this last year and have been aefw free for several months. One eggs will start an infestation again.

Yes, was the "chewable" sentinel spectrum... I crumble it up in a small (100-mL) glass bottle and then fill with seawater and shake until dissolved. Once dissolved, I dump into my sump. I repeat one week later. After 2 weeks, I turn the skimmer back on...

I just went through this with AEFW. Do not dip rocks, it is almost impossible to get all the bayer out. When I first noticed I had them I did the same thing and did what I thought was a very good rinse. All my fish got sick and since I had ich in my system in went crazy and lost about half of them. After I got back from deployment I fragged everything up and dipped once a week for 8 weeks. After the 8th week I waited a month and then dipped again to make sure I got them all, nothing came off on that dip and did not find a single egg on anything. It was a pain but definitely worth it to rid them from my system.
