was up everyone, so I sold my very healthy Multibar Angel(idk why) then decided to get a few anthias to replace him, walked into my LFS walked out with a potters angel and flamback L MAO, the potters was always in my list and my last one lasted 6/7 months in my tank without eating and once I saw all the Algea gone I knew there was gonna be a problem he passed so I decided to give him another try, I usually add fishes to my sump until they are eating specially with the potters being so picky but this flameback is vicious even though he’s smaller than the potters, anyway I separated them with some eggcrate to let them get used to each other but now I’m reconsidering, the potters is a must in my tank. Although I had similar experiences with a flame/coral beauty once they were in my tank 75g they had enough space to stay away from each other.

Shine in on your experiences with the flameback, especially if you have one right now,

I currently have 2 clams maxima and derasa which are the deal breakers for me if they touch them they are out, I have mostly sps and zoas in my tank which they can munch But how aggressive is the flameback not much info on these guys online

Idk this lil guy is making me reconsidering adding him to the tank, he’s eating like a pig and the potters is still spitting out food so it will be a while before I add them to the display

I bought a flame back after my flame angel died. My LFS said he would trust them over the flame angel in a reef. Mine in a little over a year has been a model citizen. I have A large maxima, several SPS sticks, plenty of full fleshy LPS, and even some zoas. Hasn't touched a single one.

My African Flameback harassed my lemonpeel until he died and refused to let my tricolor wrasse sleep in the rockscape for two weeks, other than that he has been fine. Hasn't nipped at any of the coral, started eating algae off the rocks immediately, takes flakes, frozen or pellet readily. Just territorial towards any other angel and wrasses for some reason. Other than that, model citizen.

He’s definitely aggressive I thought the potters was gonna bully him, I sepererated but I’m reconsidering he’s really nice looking tho

I was following along.....I never had a flame back, but I have had other dwarfs....I have had no luck with a Potters though....which is a shame because they are beautiful. Do you have pics? My tank is a 200 gallon so no issues mixing Angels, but in my old 80 gallon I had a agressive coral beauty at one point, which was surprising. He was taken back to my LFS. Now I have a Flame Angel and a adult Emperor Angel. I added a Potters and there were no agression from the flame but he would never eat anything but algae.

Mixing dwarf angels is not generally a good idea.

That said I have a flameback angel and he is pretty mean. He also eats my coral.
Friend had the same issue with it eating his coral.

After the flameback harassed the lemonpeel to death I added a lemonpeel that was twice as big as the flameback and that put him in his place. That's the rule I live by now with dwarf angels, the newcomers need to be bigger than the territorial existing residents. The flameback tried to bully the bigger fish, gave up after a day and now they coexist peacefully.

I will take one when I get home, this one has a really nice orange coat compare to my old one, he’s at least nibbling and but spits back out I think this is gonna be the one because the other wasnt faced at all by any food I offered.

I like to live on the edge lol..jk lol... I know I’ve had luck so far I have done 2 pairs on flame/coral beauty with no issue, the last pair the coral beauty after about a year kinda got aggressive but I believe it had to do with the size of my tank vs his size he was a hefty one, after those 2 I had a potter and Multibar which were doing great but the potter would not eat and after about 6-7 months he perished and decided to sell the Multibar since he was the biggest fish in my tank and I knew adding a potter was gonna be a bad idea, I can’t wait to get home to see how are they acting towards each other the potters was close to the eggcrate looking at Flameback like he wanted a piece hopefully he’s more calm, the Flameback shocked me tho he’s about half inch smaller than the potters but gave him the run around and a few tail whips but no nips from either

This actually does work my first pair the flame was in the tank a few weeks but the coral beauty I added was a tad bigger so the bullying stopped as soon as the coral beauty got comfortable then a year later I noticed the aggression increasing

These 2 are probably 1.5” for the potter and 1”or less for the flameback the smallest I’ve seen for both my LFS told me flameback can be aggressive but I figured the potters size can help, btw after the summer I will start my 120 build so hopefully I can give them a bit more space to claim it I keep them, the potter is staying for sure but the flameback looks so nice I think I like him better than the Multibar and that was a really nice fish!

My flameback was not terribly aggressive but he was the only dwarf angel in the tank. The only other angel was a female Wantanabei. He was a model citizen for about a year. Then he started eating zoas, then he branched out to acans and before I could catch him took big hunks out of one of my monti's. He was re-homed.

He doesn’t seem too aggressive atm hes small enough to get through the eggcrate and crossed over to the potters side and saw Lil bit of fight but def not wanting to kill each other, think he’s going for sale since the potter is at least spitting out food not risking it
