So two nights ago some storms rolled in and I was woken up by my fiancé saying "honey, the fish! The power just went out." I lied there praying for it to pop back on and readying myself for a long night tending two tanks with no power.

Well... no more worries like that.

Just make sure it is in a well ventilated area..

I wouldn't use a generator that doesn't have a digital inverter for clean power. The one you bought won't be the greatest for sensitive equipment.

I have a power inverter and can use a marine battery. I ruled out a generator when I realized that it would need to be rolled out of the garage and started up 4 Xs a year to be sure that it would start in a crisis. I am sure to have working batteries to power the inverter and I will run only the most essential equipment.

Can anyone recommend one? I started looking today, especially since there is a chance Irma might hit my area. I need one to power my tank and some household things.

What's the worst that's going to happen with a traditional generator? And what are the chances this something may happen? Can't get myself to spend double or triple the price for something I'm likely not going to use because there's a tiny chance it may damage my circulation pump...

Electric motors prefer a true (pure) sine wave which is what comes out of the wall. Most cheaper generators have a modified sine wave which is what most people call "dirty power."

I have a cheapish generator as well and it runs my return pump and heaters and what not without a problem. I wouldn't want to do it for days on end but for up to eight hours I've never had a problem. I probably wouldn't put any DC pumps on it though. I actually just installed a battery backup yesterday to run the DC stuff, and I can't run the generator overnight. My generator actually has a 12v DC plug but you can't use it same time as the AC plugs.

Anything you can buy to go between the generator and sensitive electric motors to clean up the power?

A great investment if you think how much we spend on our tanks. I have a portable generator that can be connected to my electrical panel via a power inlet. A whole house generator with auto switch-over would be best but I can't justify the cost.

I'm sure there is something, but you're probably better off to get a generator with one built in if you went that way. You can get pure sine wave inverters to go off a battery but they're about $250+ on their own.

"The generator features Volt Guard, a built-in surge protector which protects your appliances from any spikes in voltage"

May help a bit?

Cancelled order for now... I may just go get an inverter for the 29g tank and a battery powered air stone for the 10g. Truly do appreciate all your input. I've done some more research and understand much better.

Update: can't cancel as it's shipping soon... guess I'll hope for the best!
