I love nano tanks too! I currently have 4 Nanos, 1 salt, and 3 fresh!

Frankly? No. It didn't help at all actually lol.

The two things that seem to help are Skimmer, and UV which makes me think Phyto or Bacterial bloom. The skimmer helps really quickly, the UV takes longer, but the UV has to hang off the front of the tank, and the Skimmer has to go in the top with the light up. Not really attractive long term options. I'm going to run the skimmer for an hour once a week for a while and see if this fixes itself in time.

The're great!!! Now that this one's at home, and I have a different job, I'm thinking about getting a smaller one for my work,.. like a 3 gallon or something. Only because my desk is smaller now. That build will come later.

So over all the tank is doing pretty well, but I seem to be dealing with a couple of issues now.

1. The light - turning this up was the right move for sure, but it's not been the total fix, I believe that it was one part of the puzzle. I'm not going back, but I did bring the blues from 100% to 95% because it made the fan in the light slow down a little. There was no real difference in Par.

2. Food for the coral - I think I've been missing nutrients in a form the coral can enjoy. I've started feeding 3 times per day and including some coral food and its causing the LPS to open further. They don't accept direct feeding, but boosting the nutrients seems to be helping.

3. I think I have a serious case of Ulva, it's growing all over the rocks at the bottom of the tank, and the elevated nutrients aren't making it shrink. I'm going to focus on what makes the coral healthy for now, and get some snails to try and combat the algae.

Guess what?!!!
I've started a new tank!!! It's just cycling now, but it will be a very simple 3 gallon which really will go to work. I will probably change the title of this thread and make a new one for it in a while. It has nothing in it yet,.. just salt water, but given how long this one took to cycle with dead rock I wanted to get a head start. It's been running for probably 3 weeks now.


Now back to this tank. Feeding a little bit more and running the tank a little bit higher nutrient has been great for the coral!!! The corals that were struggling are doing better already, and the ones that were doing good, are now doing great. I've changed water changes to 1 gallon once a week (still automatic), and though the Algae is liking the nutrients as well I'm not worried about that right now. My focus is helping the tank find it's footing.

The cloudy water sortof comes and goes, it's gone for a month, than there for a week, and gone for a month. I'm sure it will settle out soon, it's already getting better.

Thank you!!! It's been running since about February, making it just over 6 months now. I feel like it's just starting to really take off, the first 6 months I felt like the tank was much less stable.

I don't really need to dose anything in this tank. I feed lightly, and I test CA/Alk/Mag every couple weeks and dose a little baking soda, CACL, Mag if needed, but normally I don't need it. My salt comes in high in Alk, and I don't have anything that uses CA/Mag at a high rate.

Soon I will setup a larger tank again which will have clams and SPS. That will use two part with my DOS, but this tank is setup to be a little lower maintenance.

This tank was doing so well!!!!

But,.. Oklahoma got hit with a nasty ice storm, right now 250,000+ people are without power, I am one of them. I lost power about 48 hours ago, for the first 24 hours I was able to keep the tank at 65 fairly easily using an indoor rated propane heater, and my backup on my flow worked well and lasted 48 hours as expected. The propane heater also kept the house in the mid 50's which was livable.

The second day though I ran out of propane and had to leave when the house dipped into the 40's. I tried to run an inverter off my car for a bit to heat the tank but even the 50W Heater couldn't deal with the cold outside, and coming from CA I really don't have winter cloths yet. Everything in my house is electric so I couldn't even warm water on the stove, or use hot water from the water heater in a container to heat or anything.

Today my house still doesn't have power, but my work does! Do I brought as much coral/snails/fish as I could to the little 3G at work. The home tank had gotten really cold, one fish was dead, but another was still alive. Snails were moving, and the urchin was alive,.. so hopefully at least some fish, inverts and corals will pull through.

This is not normal for this area, but since I'm going to be setting up a very large tank when I buy my own home again it looks like a generator will be necessary to live here.

This tank was intended to sit on a desk back in CA, but everything changed right as I was finishing it up. Now that I'm out in Oklahoma I don't have a desk to sit it on, so for all this time it's been sitting on this really ugly temporary, towel covered sowing table that I bought for $5 at Goodwill. That looked like this:

But now I've finally finished construction on my custom base. This is the most ambitious stand project yet, I even made floating panel doors and drawer fronts for it. The APEX has moved to a board inside the stand for easier maintenance, and I even have drawers for text kits and coral tools. Here is how it looks now:

So,.. this tank has had a ruff go of it. The recent power failure due to the ice storm was really brutal, and it went on for over a week. I'm really lucky that I was able to save some corals in my work 3G Pico, but it had just been setup and really wasn't ready, plus the tank got into the 50's before I could get anything out so there were some losses.

Plus, some corals ended up being so happy at work that they just stayed and never came back lol.

This is what the tank looks like now. It's on it's new base, and now that the 135 is in the living room it's in it's proper place, right by my bed.

This thing is desperate for some stability. I have a move coming up in a few months, but until then, and after that I'm hands off.

Oh, yeah. The place I'm moving to will have an external generator connection on the first day.

Just a quick update, this tank is really humming along, and I moved my Rock Flower into this tank because it didn't seem to want to settle in the 135 since it doesn't have any sand.

Just a quick update on this tank. It's been on autopilot for a while now since all of my energy has been going into the build of the 135G,.. Not that it's been neglected, just that it's a fairly low maintenance tank.

I do about 40% water change monthly and syphon the sand, and I have All For Reef on a dosing pump with about 0.7 ml 2x per day and everything stays pretty stable.
