Aggressive Clownfish

Have had 2 ocellaris clownfish that are both about an inch long so I assume pretty young for approximately one month. The slightly bigger one would get a little nippy now and then but this past week has really upped the aggression. I have tried moving the rock work around but that hasn't worked and I really want my little one to heal so I have decided to take in the aggressor to my local lfs and get a new fish (no more pairs for me).

I was wondering if I blue/green chromis would be a peaceful addition or would a cardinal fish be better.

30gallon cube tank
2 clowns currently
1 Royal gramma
1 peppermint shrimp
several assorted snails.

So if what you listed and I’m reading right you had three clowns ?. Because your list states you still have two then that was more than likely the issue , if I’m wrong and you only have one left then I would get another one and see if they get along . Clown fish start out as males and if you have two males when their young then one will eventually tour into a female . Make sure they have a lot of hiding spaces. I didn’t see your aggression with them but my guess if you only had two that they probably were fighting for dominance and the winner would possibly be the one who turns

I have exactly what you do with the addition of a sapphire damsel. A Blue Green Chromis should work fine and I have an order in for a Agile Chromis. Make sure you quarantine. The first one I brought home died from uronema. Once it in your tank, there is no getting it out other than sterilization. I believe the cardinal would work fine too. I am hoping to get a Red Stop Light Cardinal.

The aggression may be them finding out who the female will be. It should cool down when they figure it out. And chromis are mostly not very aggressive

The bigger will always be the aggressor and is the female who displays a hierarchy. The female hogs up the food, pushes the other around, dominates territories and anemones and will nips and bite at the male reason why male is smaller. isolation of female sometimes help but not always

I have to take pictures from far. When the orange one notices me he goes on attack mode because he thinks I'm going to feed the tank.

Clowns are a$$es. Despite their cute and cuddly reputation they are some of the most agrressive fish out there. If it wasn’t for the fact that my daughter got me my black storm clown, I would be tossing her down the Porcelain express. Bullies my Clarke relentlessly.

Yah ! From the pic I’m not seeing much damage to either . If it were me and my option is that I would keep them both . Keep a eye on them, but I think this is normal behavior . Totally up to you of course

I hope so. At this point each fine has a tear at this point and I don't really enjoy looking at my tank because each time I do I see the orange one chasing.

No matter what you do, you will always have an aggressive clownfish. It’s just their temperament, they’re only peaceful as juveniles but once they begin maturing and transitioning it’s just a game of fingers with them.
Chromis are related to clowns as they’re both part of the damsel family so chances are you’ll still have aggression if not more aggression.

Reality is, Damsels aren’t in distress they just want a reason to fight you.

got rid of one false percula cause he would go nuts-couldn’t put hand in tank

have a black and a picasso that i just put in together about 3 months ago…black is becoming a little feisty- with the picasso and my hand especially when near his rockwork home…

on a side note my chromis who i think killed out all my chromis is attached to my blue tang, swimming by his side all day everyday…like he thinks he is a blue tang

Well I tried to take the clown out today but failed. Ill try again another day and let them relax for today but they definitely make it difficult.

Good morning,

I bought them together and was told that the smaller one was the bully of the tank. I managed to swipe the aggressor last night and turned him to the store.

The little one already appears more out going and willing to swim all around the tank.

Glad to hear you got him returned and your other fish is happy. I have two tanks running and both have clownfish, my third tank will NOT have any clownfish.
