I am trying to quarantine a Hoeven's wrasse and a juvenile red coris together in a 10 gal tank. The red coris is destined for my big semi-aggressive tank and the Hoeven's meant to go into a 60 gal. "non-aggressive" tank with firefish, small Banggai, etc. From what I read Hoeven's supposed to be peaceful.
However, he often chases the red coris esp. at feeding time and gets him very stressed. Will seperate them soon.
Just wondering if anyone has an aggressive Hoeven? Cannot decide which tank for him in future. Will he show less aggression in a larger tank? Can the red coris co-exist with him in the 180 gal?
Thanks!

First, welcome to R2R. My Hoeven's is a model citizen and a terrific fish, other than his appetite for snails. No aggression that I've ever noticed, but it's in a 120g tank.

Does the temporary tank you have it in have a sand bottom?

Hoevans/melanurus can be aggressive toward other similarly shaped wrasses, though that is not always the case. They are generally much better behaved toward nonrelated fishes.

In a larger tank one is less likely to view a red coris as competition for resources, so will be less of a problem.

Thank you dbl! the small 10 gal. has 30% sand bottom. The other 70% has thick and rigid filter media( easy to remove in case medication is needed). These wrasses can get very stressed with a bare bottom.

Also thanks to eatbreakfast( I'd be happy if all my fish did that, lol!). I placed the red coris with a yellow tang and they became best buddies.

Update: you guys were right! After removing the red coris I wanted to make sure the Hoeven's not aggressive. I gat a small 1-3/4 inch hippo tang and they get along fine. The hippo often
snugs up on him and folows him around. The Hoeven also becomes not as shy now.

That's interesting as usually the Coris is the more aggressive of the two, but if the coris was smaller then I could see it.

Yes I know. It could be revenge time a few months later, lol! That'why they'll go into separate tanks after quarantine.

Update: put it in the non-aggressive tank a week ago where he's the biggest fish. He scared the crap out of the small banggai's and firefish mainly because he's a fast swimmer
and sometimes makes quick dashes. They finally realize he's harmless and have settled down.
