I have a mated pair of maroon clowns and as typical the female picks on the male. The male ultimately defends himself, so there has never been any damage to either fish. But what I have noticed, is any time I go into the tank to add new coral or rearrange things in the tank, the female clown attacks my hands and arms. It started out being a cute little bump, but has now turned into pretty aggressive biting. I know that the maroons tend to be more aggressive than most other clowns, but is this normal.

very normal, maroons are the most aggresive clowns imo. when they are confined to a small tank they get more aggresive, the bigger the tank, the less the aggresion ime

I find clowns of all species have a high probability of biting hands. Maroons may hurt more due to size, but every clown i have owned has wanted to nip me during maintenance once they get beyond juvenile age.

All clowns are a pain ime. Maroons are the worst offenders. My full grown percula bites me & chases way bigger tankmates in a 180.

I have a 4” clown who’s beating up my whole tank including the yellow tang and some of the more aggressive types like my neon dotty back and damsels. There’s been some nipped fins. Anyway I can combat this? Two other clowns get the smacking too ones a 3” and the other is a 1 1/2” all about 4-5 years old been in the same tank for close to a year now.

My black clown made re-aquascaping my tank a living nightmare. Bit at the web skin between my fingers. Like it knew the most painful and annoying thing it could possibly do to me. Repeatedly...I spent about 60% of the time fending it off so I could work.

I have a tomato clown that I have kept for over 15 years. It still attacks me every time I put my hand near it. You would think that after all of this time, it would finally warm up to me.

I have a Maroon Claw fish that except for eating time stays in the Lt corner of a 2 meter aquarium. A month ago I planted 2 SPS in his area. I often find them at the bottom of the aquarium and re -return them. I once placed them on the rock in his corner and noticed that he was picking them up in his mouth and throwing them on the bottom. I picked them up again and followed after and then I saw that he was biting until he dropped them and then lifted them in his mouth and threw them on the bottom again. For several months, the Acanthastrea is constantly closed while in the past it was open. The ICP test is good. It turned out that Maroon was attacking anything new in his territory. That's why I took it out, since the coral do not fall. Very territorial and aggressive fish.
