My Sohal Tang is a monster and it's likely that I'll still have to give it away but this actually worked. I saw it on a BRS video.

It's worth a shot for anyone having similar tang issues. Anyone tried this before? Pretty cool.

This definitely works. My dad has been doing it since the 80s and it works most of the time. Another thing you can try is rearranging rocks after turning the lights off. However, for obvious reasons that is not always possible in reef tanks or epoxied rocks etc.

Another thing you can do is put him in time out. Put him in an acclimation box or separate him using egg crate for a week or so. Then the other fish can reestablish the pecking order.

I do it but it’s also important to re-scape the tank as well for alpha such as sohal

I've got a Convict and a Sailfin Tang who sat tank to tank for 3 years. When I finally put them in my large system, there was 0 issue. Been over a year, no issue.

Recently added a Kleini Butterfly fish. Convict Tang did not approve. I expected it so I had the Tang in a big acclimation/isolation box on the side of the tank, got him out and into the sump for a bit. Took my big bathroom mirror and put it on the side of the tank and took the Tang out a few days later and reintroduced to the tank. Spent the last week swimming at himself with the kleini. The past 2 days I've been taking it away for an hour here and there, 0 aggression. I'll Probably leave it for a month or so and see. Anything arises, I'll just swap the Convict out at lfs since he is a big healthy one but a nightmare for me lol

Is it a good idea to do it for that long tho? It’s also added stress to the tang

When I read up on it, it's no difference to when they are wild and flash one another. When they are tired, they leave, and forgot. Then he gets ramped up, ends up seeing himself and begins the process again. Now he is at the point where he doesn't care or bother with his reflection because he knows he can't win, thus the hierarchy establishment. Somehow in all this, he has forgotten about the kleini, in fact they often swim together around the tank now with the sailfin. Tangs picking the rock, kleini picking the Aiptasia. Can even see in the video, mirrors across the left side, after about 8 days, they don't care about it and the Tang isn't going after the kleini in the slightest. No one is stressed.

How long do you have the mirrors up?

It’s day 3 and the sohal has started to care less and overall direct aggression has lessened. Might give it another day and bring it down to see what happens. Interesting thing is the blade is out 24/7 so it’s still ticked all the time.

So he doesn’t forget that he is mad and that’s why the blades are out all the time?

spending less time trying to attack the mirror but the blade is still out. Still eats and grazes on algae unfortunately it’s less interactive with me and overall demeanor is still angry.

Had a lfs that wanted him, came and saw him then backed out…lol.

What do they expect? A peaceful sohal after the mirror therapy. Lol

I’d take your Sohal for my new 600 gallon tank but I’m probably at least 6 months out on getting it going since it hasn’t been built yet.

Hopefully I’ve got a solution by then but large Sohals are a lot easier to find that small ones. I’d also highly recommend adding it last. Dussimeri would be very cool in a 600.
