in short 2 1" drains cant drain with a 1.5" pipe. it will create back pressure and fill the pipe.

you need to have both drains going directly to the sump if you put both drains together you would need probably a 3"pipe

if you keep it like it is I wouldnt go more than about 500gph total for a return pump

You should never need any kind of valve for the drains in any sump system.

The overflow should allow whatever is being pumped to the upper container (the display usually) to drain to the lower containers (eventually the sump).

when the water level in the upper container goes below some level, the flow to the sump should stop.

If that is not the case then you need to redo your overflow so it is.

And never have to add a valve to match the drain with the return.

??? Do you have a hang on overflow? I first thought you were attempting a Herbie type drain but now it sounds like you have a u-tube siphon type overflow.

i have the same setup... CPR overflow with dual 1" drain line "Y"ed into a single 1.5" line to the sump. the drain lines contain no valves. question? inside you overflow box, is there anything in it or is it straight into your drain lines. i have 2 gurgle busters (Hofer Gurgle Buster) on each of my drain lines. the reason i ask is you said completely drains teh overflow. my overflow never drains unless i pull out my gurgle buster. i have a mag 18 as my return pump that is dialed down with a ball valve because i split that return flow into a media reactor, but other than that not much tweaking. the overflow can only drain whats going in tank...

Yea I thought it should all just work but wasn't the case so valves were added. Also the the valves allow me to not lose suction if I have to shut the system down, just close em and suction remains

I am here: Google Maps

that should not be necessary.

You should be able to kill the power and the upper container (display) will drain to a point then stop.

And never break siphon.

If that does not happen there is something wrong with your setup.

Which should be corrected.

Can you provide more details or pictures?
