Hey guys!
I'm having a heck of a time trying to figure out which wavemakers to go with on my RSR 250. I plan on doing mostly softies and LPS mayne the odd SPS down the road. Im leaning towards the AI Nero's and would like some opinions from you guys on if 2 Nero 3's will be fine or if I should go with 2 Nero 5's.

TIA

I have a nero 3, while it pushes quite a bit of water, I would opt for the fives if I was going with just them.

You can always turn them down, but you can only turn them up so far. You'll appreciate the extra power of the fives if and when you need it.

Second, but I'd go with a pair of 5s on the back wall. That tank has a center overflow, iirc?

100% agree, but it looks like he only bought 1.

In my 80G cube I run a collection of powerheads, but at slower speeds. I beleive in 0 dead spots, and if I run many powerheads at slower speeds, rather then 1 or 2 at higher speeds, my pumps will last longer, and I can really kick up the flow if I need to.

I currently run 2 mp10's, 2 jebao pp8's, 2 nero 3's, and up until 2 days ago a gyre xf250(motor block died just the other day). But a cube is tough to get good flow in without many dead spots.

Agreed on the pain to keep water moving in a cube. Previous tank was a 50g cube, had 4 powerheads and still had flow issues.

I'm currently running two Nero 5's and a Jebao scp 70 gyre on the back wall of my 120, flow is good, but I'm thinking about one more Nero 5 to replace the somewhat loud SCP 70 or going in on 3 jebao MLW 30's and sell the Nero 5's.

Money... Lol. It's all money

Yeah I hear ya.

While I liked the gyre, pretty sure I will not be buying another. The amount of flow they loose when they get a little algae on them, isn't worth the cleaning time to me.

Yeah the gyres are a pain to clean. My gyre is purple at this point due to being so much Coralline on it. It won't die, I'm kinda hoping it does so I have reason to replace it but knowing my luck it won't. It will just remain slightly loud, enough to annoy me but not enough to have me do anything about it!

End game, will I buy another gyre, I'm in your boat, NO. I jumped on the gyre bandwagon, I'm just glad I went on the cheaper end of it.

Yeah wish I had gone the cheaper route. Bought the maxspect when they first came out, and the apex module to control it. Think all in, I'm around $400 for a freaking pump that only lasted a couple years!

Heck my mp10's are about 10 years old now and on the original wet sides. Even my jebao's are about 8 years old now. I clean them about twice a year with about, maybe 10% loss of flow.

Gyres give great laminar all around flow through the tank regardless of how they are setup, but the amount of flow that decreases in such a short period of time(as they get dirty) just isn't worth the juice. IMO

Whats the old saying.....

The juice isn't worth the squeeze?

The Nero 3 is pretty powerful. I my minireef 120 I'm running it at max 30% power
