AI Nero 5 and Wave puck pumps, difference?

I noticed you mention that the size is not that big of a difference, yet I would argue The difference is quite large. Given the dimensions that you stated earlier:

By calculating the volume (the area in the tank taken up by the device), you will find that the wavepuck is 50% larger (14.7 cubic inches vs 9.7 cubic inches). In my book, that is huge! If someone could produce a pump that produce the same flow with a 50% reduction in size from the Nero, that would be a huge accomplishment.

You always have to remember RB is a blog not news. By reading the four articles it appears that yes, Jake was expecting a leap much larger than the final Waveline product provided. But in the end it was his opinion. There’s nothing wrong with the wavelike pump. It is a very good pump. But to claim that Jake’s review was bias because of sponsorship money is completely ignoring the three pre-release articles to hype the product and the fact the Nero is much closer to what he was expecting to come from Waveline.

What are you talking about man, you measure your pump size using a very odd method :) When you say 50% it sounds HUGE, but is only a fraction of inches... I think most companies just measure their pumps to determine how big they are, but either way I have explained my thoughts enough. I get what your saying too.
I don't believe I said anything about him being bias or sponsorship money being part of it all, that was not why I made this thread.

I was not speaking of you in particular regarding the bias in my post. It was meant as addressing the group rather than one individual reefer. I apologize if you felt it was unfairly intended to you specifically.

LOL I think it is entirely a guess. I did buy a couple of the ReefBreeders RPM units and so far have been happy with them. No clue as to longevity since I've had them less than 6 months. Build quality seems on par with other Chinese pumps.

Same here. Absolutely love the rpm pumps. For my purpose they are my current favorite powerhead.

That is interesting about the design looking similar but being more conventional. What are the advantages/disadvantages of each when the final form factor is so similar?

I would guess the difference is going to be in long term use and which one runs longer without issues? Not sure. But I would grab one of those pumps too but I like the fact that the WP and the AI pumps have a inclosed impeller so they don't get algae growth in them. That really lets me run my wavepuck for long periods of time without cleaning.

Old thread I know but I was just removing my Wave Puck after three years of continuous duty and it is the only pump I have used that has kept up with my Tunze pumps as far as reliability. That list includes Gyres (which loose their GPM as soon as a small amount of algae attaches to them) and Neptune Wav pumps as well as a few Chinese pumps) I have never cleaned this pump outside of the tank and it is covered with coralline. It just keeps on moving a lot of water. Maybe I got lucky. I'm setting up a new IM150 and would love two or four of these on the back wall. Unfortunately they were discontinued years ago. I'll have to go with the Neros if I want similar results but at twice the cost.
