AI Prime lighting spectrum

Hi community
I just got a used AI Prime ( not the HD ). So I do not have the ability to overdrive the intensity on the leds. I am currently using the AB+ Spectrum. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a good spectrum setting that produce growth and good colouring, I feel like I’m missing out with the AB+ spectrum because it has a lot of white light in it. Or if this is how it should look and I’m just being a dumb rookie you can let me know. Thanks

Essentially the colors of these lights can be broken down into these

The blue and violets
-give the coral that color pop
- main channel for coral growth
- the most useable by zooxanthellae
-typically run at 100% unless the corals are not tolerant (usually this happends if you get a light for your tank that is overkill)


Greens

1. used by some secondary pigments (so some things can use it for photosynthesis)
2. Typically not seen as necessary
3. Doesn't have any really bad side effects as far as I am aware.

Red

1. May lead to better colors in terms of how your fish look to you
2. While used by algaes in general, corals seem to not do well with high reds in many cases. I have hear that it is thought to be an indication of depth, with high reds leading to corals shielding themselves from what they perceive as too much light. Red is sorta controversial with people. I tend to recommend using the 0 to a minimum that looks good to you.

White

1. broad spectrum
2. mainly for visual appeal
3. contrary to popular belief, I do not think that white causes algae anymore than blue would
4. Set it to what you find visually attractive

The biggest factor is mounting it at the proper height and only changing the channel intensities small amounts at a time.

If you are using the BRS calibrated settings meant for the HD(13) on the original Prime, i.e. non-HD, something to consider is that there are different numbers of the most relevant colors on the two units. Here is the original non-HD layout:

Note: 4 x whites, 3 x Blues, 2 x Deep Blues. The rest are the same as the HD. Here is the HD layout, which you will see 3 x whites, 3 x Blues, 3 x Deep Blues:

So when I use the original AI Prime trying to emulate AB+ settings, I adjust them a bit from the BRS HD recommended ones to bump the deep/royal blue up a bit (from their 79% up to 100%) and push the whites down a bit (from their 20% down to 15 or even less) to compensate for the differences in LED distribution. Of course this means you are not making use of the full wattage of the unit, but you should notice a difference in algae susceptibility as well as colors popping, especially at ramp up and ramp down (if you leave the UV and V on more prominently during those times).

Lol never seen reds so high... have you seen benefits as opposed to not running reds that high? Or did you just tune to color ? Any algae growth when you first used the schedule ? You’ve peaked my interest hahaha

Sorry! Forgot to mention that I have a mangrove and that’s why the reds are so intense. It creates more algae but it’s okay cause I love my mangrove but I had my lights on around 8% red before the mangrove
