Hello everyone, I’m new to the hobby and just added my first green star polyps and upgraded my lights from 2 Aqueon Color max leds to an AI Prime and I’m unsure if what settings to run to prevent damaging the new coral. I’m not sure if it matters but they are ECC Kaleidoscope star polyps. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Acclimation mode is always a safe bet.
Ramp up over a period of a few weeks

Are you looking for base settings for each color channel?

Hey @BhamGator89,

Welcome to the reefing world!

wanted to say first off, I am also relatively new to the wonderful world of reefing. But I myself had this same question, and had help looking through old posts with no real instruction. So I will share what I have done,

below are some photos of the schedule I run. The first being what my day looks like, the second is my start up lighting, third is my peak lighting, and I actually have this photoperiod and spectrum set up almost identical to the BRS AB mix for the prime. With a few exceptions on the white Spectrum. I also have mine 8” off of the surface of the water. I will include the link to the YouTube video

I Have 3 corals, one mushroom (Ricordia Florida), a duncan and a Acanthestrea. They all seem to enjoy this lighting. (It’s very good for LPS and Softies)

I did start my ramp up at 60% for 8 days, followed by 75% for 6 days, 85% for 4 days, and I am now on my 100% cycle and they have made the acclimation very well.

I have never had GSP but from what I read they are extremely hardy, my advice would be start slow and low, and pay attention to what they are telling you. If they reach, they want more light. If they hide, you’ve got it up a little high. And remember, less is always better than more when it comes to lighting.
Corals can adapt to low light conditions and last much longer as apposed to quickly dying off and excreting the Zooxanthella from their tissues from too much light.

Good luck, hope this helps!

Awesome!!! That’s exactly what I was looking for. You guys are the greatest. Thank you for the quick replies

Yes I was looking for a baseline setting to prevent myself from screwing anything up. I’m not very tech savvy and this thing is pretty in depth. I’m going to give MDSreefing’s settings a go but if you have any input I’m all ears.

I did manage to find the acclimation mode so I’ve got that set but I was unsure of the color percentages etc. I’m going to give MDSreefing’s setting and see if that works. but if you have any advice let me know and I’ll give it a shot!

If you need help with the settings let me know. I had the ability to play with my prime while the tank was being cycled for the first two months, so I get what you mean. It’s not the easiest thing to do but once it’s set, it’s good to go for most if not all types of corals from my understanding. But mostly LPS and Softies with just one prime and this spectrum

GSP REALLY ISNT PICKY WITH LIGHT.

Thanks MDS I greatly appreciate it. I copied your settings and now I’m good. I was suffering from paralysis by analysis. I owe you one

GSP REALLY ISNT PICKY WITH LIGHT.
Yeah that’s why I picked it as my first coral but I still wanted to make sure I didn’t damage it right out of the gate with a bad light setting and my ignorance. Hopefully I can be successful with it then I’m going to start adding some variety but I wanted to get my feet wet with the easy stuff first.

Hahaha that tends to happen. Best thing to do to eleviate that issue is to just accept you may fail, but do your best to learn as much as you can if you do. But good news is your selection of coral is pretty much indestructible from what I read, so that’ll get your confidence up and it’ll be smooth sailing.

and remember if you do your research and set everything up correctly before you dive in the first time, you’re chances of failing drastically decrease.

I know all of this cause I did and do the same thing, as I’m sure we all have and will do. Keep on learning and enjoying the experience, that’s why we’re all here in the first place!
