I am 14 and I have a 36 gallon bow front tank and just got two 800 gph powerheads. Is there a specific aiming thing with powerheads. I am most likely going to add coral later so I was wondering if there is a certain way to position powerheads in a reef tank.

I would say put in opposite corners 1 on right front corner at top and 1 on left rear corner at top the face slightly downward however 800 GPH may be a bit overkill for a 36 gallon you could also try opposite rear corners

Are there any corals that would survive and thrive in this flow?

Sps like high flow, but are a bit more challenging for a new reefer.
Also, the amount of flow is affected by the amount of rock in the tank.
If you can post a picture, that may help some suggestions.

Sorry I need to clean my tank right now and also live rock is another thing I need to add a lot more of I only have about 15-20 pounds in there right now. I haven't put the powerheads in the tank yet either.

I think with those 2 power heads going in a tank like that it may be too much flow try one in a rear corner pointed at front opposite corner slightly downward . I bet it will be enough but worse case you can always add another

Had the same tank up until a week ago. I was able to get a rw-15 to work on else mode. Which is about 2100gph. See photo of the position. Bottom left.

As your tank matures, you will begin to notice dead spots in the sand where detritus builds up and red slime algae (cyanobacteria) start to grow. Right now, as long as corals and fish are happy, then let them be for a while. You can always tweak placement.

I just swapped some powerheads from one side of the tank to the other because one was a small aqua-jet that couldn't be adjusted other than placement, and the other is a smaller version of the one you have. I moved it so I could have my adjustable powerhead near my Pavona and hollywood stunner, since they seem to like a more direct flow.

Watch and tweak.
