Have my IM 30L up and running and planning to do my first water change. Given the tank is shallow, taking water from the display will leave the Rock and corals exposed. Planning to turn the pump off, siphon about 5g out of back and then put the new mixed water directly into back.
Is this how others are doing it or is there a process you have optimized? Given the measurements on tank this should give me about a 15-20% water change

I had a jbj 30 and did all the wc from the back due to poo poo build up. My scape was low so it was not a problem.

My 30g now is a sumpless one, a plain glass box. Many of the corals now come out of the water. (Squeee there big), but ther do not seem effected at all.

I do 5g in each as it's just easy. I'd rather. Do a Gal too much than deal with leftovers.

Fwiw I have an mj 1200 with a hose i put in the tank to drain and then fill.
If I'd o larger wc in the 30 or 55 no I'll effects are observed except the nems pout. The paly zena and zoas are exposed but with no problems. They already are growing out of the water.

Oh thats good to hear. I know sponges have an issue with being out of water but was not sure about corals. I am goin to look for a cheap pump for wc. The siphon method is ok for now but no one likes a mouth full of tank water when you're not paying attention :)

How would you test salinity with out a mouth full?

And I've yet to have issues with sponges out of the water. Yea dunno wats up with that. I didn't do it on purpose the first time)or six:eek:) but since I've had a lot of them to try it with.

I just expose them, weekly 5 gallon out of 7 water change. I lightheartedly call it a low tide simulation. Nobody seems to be affected, incl acros etc.
