Aiptasia in overflow

I was afraid of a file fish because they’re know to sometime eat corals, plus like every other solution some people say they don’t always work anyway. I usually try to avoid fish that I may need to re home, because I don’t know what to do with them. As I’m sure you’re aware our state doesn’t offer much options in regards to this hobby. I mean the lfs that I bought the shrimp from was in Charlotte.
Was skeptical as well. He's ugly, but well behaved.

It has very odd behaviors. Seems to attempt to hide/rest itself vertically under larger torch colonies. When hungry, it comes out with the rest of the fish, at the front of the tank for feeding time.

Very slow too...pretty sure I could scoop him with my hand if so desired.

Try netting it, they move like greased lightning . Other behavior is same as mine, hangs out with a couple of little clowns. I added a zoa rock with 3 big Aiptasia on (same size as “Leafboy”) on Saturday, they have gone.

I've never seen mine actually eat one, but they could always be found pretty easily in my display. Maybe 3 months after filefish addition....all gone.

I said to use citric acid in my last post. I've listen to reef therapy and Jake Adam said he using muractic acide. He caps the plumping at the ends and cleans the pipes in one shot.

I'm thinking of doing that and maybe the sump and return pipe in one shot. I think I can turn my return line so it flows back into the overflow. My overflow box and pipes are covered with vermitted snail.

I plan on draining the over flow and check leaks befor doing the acid.

Jake Adam's says I he would do it once a year.

@Gtinnel did you ever solve your aiptasia overflow problem? I’ve got the same issue. Put a few peppermints in there but there is still a LOT of it left.

Is your overflow box covered.
They hate the dark.
I doubt they are in the blackness of your pipes, just where light is available, even a bit.

I ended up with a huge aiptasia issue in my display that I ultimately fixed with a copperband butterfly fish. I still have aiptasia in my overflows but as long as I don’t have any in the tank I’ve ignored the ones in the overflows.

Good call. I’ll see if it helps. My last ditch effort will be to fill with hot water and citric acid and then vacuum it out.

Thanks! I don’t have any in my display now either. Peppermints took care of it but I don’t want them in there long term.
