I have a 60 litre tank for my two clownfish. I have had it for 2 years. My aerator his rather noisy, do I need it on all the time? or can I turn it off overnight?

You don't need it, if you've got a skimmer, thats already doing that job for you.

You don't have to have one for that sized tank, you don't need the aerator either. Weekly water changes, along with your powerheads making movement at the water sruface is all you need to have..

Oh. I found out on a different forum that frequent water changes were unnecessary, hence I only do it 2 or 3 times a year, (around 30% of the water) topping up in between when it drops, in fact several people have said they never change their water.
It's such a minefield with so many people on different forums giving different advice.

If you are just doing a fish only tank, then it is true, a skimmer is not really necessary. It does however, give you the ability to remove impurities and aerate the water. Here are a couple of questions I have to better give you advice/help:

Are you using any filtration other than an air stone?
If you are, are you using activated carbon in it?
Are you keeping any corals? Or anemonies?
Is it just the 2 fish?
These will allow me to better understand your needs based on what you have.

The reason you are doing water changes is to keep the Nitrates low in the tank, or at acceptable ranges., not to aerate the water. Moving powerheads to the surface a bit will do that for you.
You need to watch some water parameter numbers.

Thank you. I have an external pump containing a filter and live rock that is on all the time circulating water. I also have another smaller filter pump that came with the tank that creates movement along the surface. I have just to 2 fish and some rock. No coral or anything else

Hi,
As long as you have the water movement on the top, the water will stay aerated for the fish. I would suggest increasing the water changes so that the trace elements are there for the fish, I would suggest monthly 10-20% water changes, as long as you an do them....On a 60L tank, it shouldn't run you too much $ and the benefits are well worth it. If you have the ability to run a protein skimmer, that would handle all the aeration you would need for you tank. If you are really concerned with the aeration, you could always put the airpump on a timer and off at night. Hope this helps. Remember, stable tank parameters will make your fish happy and healthy.
