Hey guys. I’ve been working for the past 2 months to get my tank up and running and I am so close to getting water in it. I’ve built my own stand and canopy, completely enclosed on all sides. I do have a 2” hole drilled in the back on each for the cords. Do I need more of an opening than this for air flow? Should I look to add a fan to either? If so do I need to add a fan to both? If just one, the canopy or the stand? And if I do need to add a fan, got any recommendations? Thanks!

Normally you don't need a lot of airflow to keep sufficient oxygen levels in the water. I would however be more concerned with heat & humidity ventilation. A couple of passive vent holes might be enough to keep heat and humidity at acceptable levels. Under the stand if you have your sump covered then humidity should not be a concern but if your sump is uncovered and there is not much ventilation it might create a humidity issue that could impact the stand and electrical devices in the stand. Sometimes though its difficult to know if it will be an issue. I would start by having some passive vent holes that can accommodate fans for a future upgrade if they are needed. If you were going to get a fan there are some nicer computer fans that run silent with good CFM that will generally hold up for a couple of years.

If both the Canopy and inside your stand are closed off, I would recommend at least two holes and at least one fan blowing IN through one of the holes. Both of those suggestions are for both the canopy and stand. For the computer fan, look for a 80mm fan that is quiet. I also recommend getting filters for the fans. It's easier to clean the filters, than the fans and where the dust blows onto.

Entertainment center fans work well and quietly
