Airstones, Good or Terrible?

i hear ppl use the wooden airstones bc its better then the stone/porous stone ones bc it creates smaller bubbles and i hear it raises ya PH soo i plan on doing it but ppl use it in their sump
 
That’s a bummer. But keep looking. Also OfferUp is a good place to look. That’s where I got mine.
yeah, I've actually setup crawlers to look on offerup craigslist ebay and FB marketplace, so we'll see what we can find. I asked the seller why they cancelled and haven't heard back. super disappointed
 
I just want to add that air stone use in a reef tank being bad for coral etc is a myth there are alot of ppl out there who run an air stone right before the return pump to intentionally create micro bubbles which then in turn get shot into the display and scrub the tank so to speak they do this while the lights are off so it does not look like a mess when viewing and to help alleviate ph drops at night it does not hurt any type of coral at all also I want to say depleating the tank of co2 is just as bad as having to much as coral need co2 to grow just like plants do

okay, good to know. I had actually thought it was bad for fish. I was told something about microbubbles in the gills causing problems. good to know that is in fact a myth. thank you all for your opinions, it really is appreciated! I will say I'm not looking to remove all the CO2, I just do not like the way my pH numbers look XD
 
I've already got a power head and the filter outlet pointed directly at the surface on opposite ends of the tank, I've got really good agitation, as for switiching the glass for mesh, I will definitely look into that. for now I will leave the top open to see if that helps much

It might "seem" really good, but CO2 exchange to and from seawater is hard and few tanks have complete aeration. If they did, pH would not cycle day to night, but it always does.

Also, many tanks actually get low O2 at night and could benefit from more aeration. Few people measure O2, but folks should not assume it isn't a concern.

I'm not saying my aeration is good, I wouldn't have pH problems if it were, I'm saying short of putting a boat engine in the tank, I'm not really going to get more aeration from surface agitation. I have 10 gallons of water moving over that surface per minute, my filter outlet and one of my powerheads are directly on the surface.
 
Airstones: why?
 
they're top in efficiency. laminar air columns always beat eddy inducing powerheads for surface boil and gas exchange, Ive read.


question test:


lets say we have a power outage and we have limited power backup, which will be the most efficient setup for max oxygenation and preservation of the reef during the outage:

1. a common bubbler setup

2. powerheads arranged any way you want, any number you want on line.



answer, the common fish bait bubbler will win even if powerheads are causing surface ripple which is weak compared to several bubbles rising
the bubble churns the most water, causes the most gas exchange, on the least power.

staffed by hydrologists and limnologists who prevent entire lakes from crashing, the degree that they already know about air vs pump is astounding. they wrote tech blurbs in their mailer that described thousands of tests and arrangements to compare pumps vs air columns


I read no arrangement where pumps ever beat even a very weak airstream, amazing. lets dig out some links to see what's true above.

hydrology and limnology articles will back it up or refute the claim.

for daily running, the efficiency isn't work the salt scraping work for most.
eddy currents/pumps n power heads beat bubbles for food distribution, they said.


but when the heat is on, or the power is out, bubbles will save your tank long after pump arrangements cant, and all these filthy sandbeds we like to farm are chock full of o2 competing aerobes, air columns to save a reef in distress...

my own little reef is airstone only since 2006, but my lid fit prevents all salt creep or I wouldnt use it.

all my corals have only known bathed in bubbles for 15 yrs.

i'm so old i originally used undergravel filters with airstones in the lift tubes and the salt made them clog up constantly...so it was great when they invented powerheads....
 
If you already have enough surface agitation, you'll probably be fine
 
update: The person on Offerup Accepted and I did get a pretty good deal. all in with shipping ended up being 80 bucks instead of 50, but I still think I did pretty well and will now have a skimmer to hopefully help bring that pH up!

Cool, glad you got one. And, presumably, it's not missing any parts? That's probably not quite enough to make up the $30, but it might be worth it just to avoid the hassle and run around of finding the right pieces.

yeah thats with all the parts XD, and tbh, I think its worth 30 to not have to screw with it
 
What I did was made a skimmer out of water bottles and added a petco air pump/airstone to it to raise the ph. Originally it was at 7.8 never could raise it pass 8. Since adding it ph has been between 8.3 during the day and 8.1 at night. plus I get all the dirty stuff out too.

NICE. that is some smart thinking. I've added an HOB skimmer now, and its running about 8.2ish
