I have had this alage in my tank now for two months. Unsure of what kind it is dino vs cyano bacteria. However I went with using vibrant cleaner and today is dose 6. So six weeks of using it with no real effects accept some white ashy dead alage in some places. But it just comes back full force. I did a three day black out and it looked great just a little dusting. Now its coming back again. I feel as if I can almost kill it off but unsure how too fully get rid of it. Any suggestions? Bumping up phosphates and nitrates to .02 and 2-5 respectively might help. I find that cyano and dinos have a competitive edge when phosphates are unreadable (in my tank anyway).

It is also important to keep the phosphates and nitrates in the appropriate ratio.

Agree. Also, weak water flow affects cyano growth. When I replaced powerhead w gyre, some areas on sand had reduced flow and cyano immediately started appearing... still trying to get the right flow.

So I need to dose the tank with phosphates? I am using an API test kit so i will not get exact readings I may have to upgrade to a hanna more than likely. But wouldn't more phosphate give the algae more food to grow ?

All living things require phosphate. You'll want to look for the Hanna ULR Phosphorus kit if you get one.
