nk is about 6 weeks old getting a lot of alage all parameters look good would a protein skimmer help?

It'll help with waste removal and therefore nutrient control. But if you have low nutrients now it likely won't do anything immediately to improve algae. A nutrient export plan (algae scrubber or refugium or skimmer or simply water changes) is needed to maintain balance over time which will result in easier control of algae.

But you're tank is still maturing so best advice is implement some kind of nutrient management (otherwise the algae in your display tank is happy to do the job) and start manually removing as much as possible at least weekly and continue water changes until your tank matures (9-12 months average).
