Hi Guys

This is the first tank that I have set up from scratch. It is about 3 weeks old and I believe that it has completed it's cycle.

However since early in the cycle I've had a lot of algae growth.

First I had diatoms which I expected, and then it just boomed. There is green algae everywhere! (See pictures) It doesn't seem to be going any time soon which makes me worried that I'm going to be battling an algae problem before I've properly begun! Is this going to die down soon? Have I got a problem?

If anyone has any tips I'd be massively grateful.

Thanks
Tom

There are too many nutrients in the tank.

More info would be helpful, what are you putting in the tank, how are you exporting nutrients? Are you using RO/DI water? Also, where did the rock/sand come from?

i had the same problem on my new 55 gal. a friend told my as my tank breaks in it will go away and with out changing a thing after about 2 weeks of gha every where over night it all almost went away. but your parameters would be nice just incase there is somthing eles going on.

That's reassuring to know! I've just quoted my params on another post in the thread if you're interested.

When you say what am I putting in the tank, what terms are you talking about? Also I am exporting nutrients with 10-15% weekly water changes, and also cleaning the gravel bi weekly. However the sand bed is about 4" deep so may have to increase that. I am using RO/DI water, but I'm not too sure where the rock and substrate came from

Cut out weekly water changes go to once a month you have hair algae not that bad kinda like having a algae scrubber lol but run chaeto in the fuge and a good skimmer will clean it up.

Can I ask what reducing water changes will help with? Also I don't have a refugium as of yet

Run some gfo in a bag of what filter you have will clean it up. OK on wc just saying just when the tank gets right you change it again if it doesn't work go back to 1 a week but I think you will see a difference.
