Ok guys I need a lil advice my tank has been up and running good no problems I have several different coral frags and some damsels in and now I come home from work and I'm getting algae build up and a green film on the top of the water I'm running a canister filter and doing water changes like I'm suppose to should I put a protein skimmer on to help any advice would be greatly appreciated

First thing we need to know your water parameters (nitrate ,phosphates etc.)
Most nuisance algaes are caused by excess nutrients. Yes you should be using a skimmer and ditch the canister filter. These filters will cause nitrate issues if you don't clean them often. Most algae problems are caused by poor husbandry, overfeeding and not using rodi water.

The nitrate level is good the phosphate is a touch on the high side and the filter is brand new only a week old how often should it be cleaned when I bought it they told me to clean it every couple months

If you plan on raising corals you will need to clean it every week. I would not recommend it at all if you have corals. It is okay if you only have fish only. With corals all you need is a good skimmer , live rock and good circulation.

Skimmer would do wonders for you. And phosphates should be kept under .05.

Don't believe everything your LFS tells you, Remember they are trying to keep a brick and mortar business open..most of them are going to try to just sell you something just to get a sale..

I already do I only put them in for a few weeks to make sure the everything was running good now I want them out and probably going to have to take half my rocks out to catch them and I'm learning the lfs is not the best place for advice

if you clean your canister weekly, that will help. what do you have in the canister? adding a skimmer is definitely something you want to do. do you use RO/DI water?
