I noticed that when I raised my pH that my agal growth picked up. Is that common?

pH went from 7.5-7.7 to 7.8-8.3 (cracked my windows).

Very coincidental if not.

Yes, algae growth, especially green and slime algae on tank glass is increased when pH rises. Water changes are your best bet. The thing is, I believe your pH to be too low in the 7.5-7.7 range. You want your pH closer to 8.0-8.2 in my opinion.
Just make sure you bring pH down slowly or run the risk of killing fish and inverts among other beneficial living organisms.
