Hi Guys. So my Reef tank has been running nearly 6 month now. And no matter what i do i cannot seem to get rid of this Algae that returns after 1 week or so, once i remove it. When it grows on the sand at the bottom i cannot siphon it of without taking loads of sand with it which is another issue. I have been doing on average 20% water change a week for at least 4 week trying to get it to go. My tank is a 100L with built in sump at the back and i have Phosguard in there. I use a Ai Prime 16HD and run all blues around 65% and 8-10% white, 8% red and green. My Params are:

Amm-0
Nitrite-0
Nitrate-1
Phos-0.05
Cal-460
Mag-1220
Alk-7 (which i am raising slowly)
PH-8
Salinity-1.025

*Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated, so thanks for taking the time to look.

Is algae on rocks the same as on the substrate? Back off the blue light to help identity. Rocks looks like GHA and substrate looks like diatoms or cyno.

It is definitely the same on the rock as it is on the substrate, the picture was taken with just white lights on, don’t no why it came out like that.

Pull it off rock by hand. Is is soft and easily removed or is it wiry. Read link description of nuisance algae and identity.

I suggest you get total nitrogen levels higher at 10ppm.

Thanks i tried pulling of and it does remove fairly easy and not wiry, i was wondering if i should raise my Nitrogen levels or not because although they read low, i thought the Algae would be consuming some of it.

Corals and desirable macros as well as undesirables macro all need nutrients. As a generalization, undesirables will flourish when nutrients are low because they have developed better survival techniques. Raise nitrogen by feeding more. Get your cuc in gear, which includes you to tooth brushing rock & syphon out debris. I have dipped toothbrush in H202 scrubbed rock for 20 seconds and continue on.

Thanks very much for your time and help. I will do this.

How did you initially cycle? It looks like the only algae you have is green hair. Did you ever get diatoms?
