I have had this brown algae growing on the sides of my tank, on the glass down at the level of the sand. I have been told that since i was adding tap water to top off my tank, that adding that was my problem. I am now using RO/DI water to top off my tank. Will this help to get rid of this problem??

thank you! I have been fighting this for like a month sadly.... my LFS's keep telling me water changes and RO/DI will work but have not recommend any additives.
thanks again everyone!

You need to figure out why your nitrates are so high. Theoretically water changes with good ro water should lower your nitrates. If it doesn't then you need to test your ro water and make sure that it is actually pure. What's the stats on your tank? Size? Fish load? Etc...
