What is the white stuff growing on sump wall? I’ve been told algae and also suggested it was a sponge. Is it invasive, good filtration? Should I let it be or get rid of it?????Doesn’t look bad o me. What are we looking at?
Do a little digging on here and the internet and see if you can find something that looks like what you have. What is the white stuff growing on sump wall? I’ve been told algae and also suggested it was a sponge. Is it invasive, good filtration? Should I let it be or get rid of it?????
And as I said in one of your many other identical posts, remove it if you want, or leave it.What is the white stuff growing on sump wall? I’ve been told algae and also suggested it was a sponge. Is it invasive, good filtration? Should I let it be or get rid of it?????
Thanks. I’ve done that and found nothing. With all the experience on this site I’m sure someone knows exactly what it is good or bad. Can’t believe everything you google. Thanks for your help though.Do a little digging on here and the internet and see if you can find something that looks like what you have.
How old is your system? Thanks. I’ve done that and found nothing. With all the experience on this site I’m sure someone knows exactly what it is good or bad. Can’t believe everything you google. Thanks for your help though.
Maybe try to get some better pictures? Thanks. I’ve done that and found nothing. With all the experience on this site I’m sure someone knows exactly what it is good or bad. Can’t believe everything you google. Thanks for your help though.
Cryptic sponges are white and they grow in the dark. What is the white stuff growing on sump wall? I’ve been told algae and also suggested it was a sponge. Is it invasive, good filtration? Should I let it be or get rid of it?????
YepCryptic sponges are white and they grow in the dark.
You are so helpful. Thanks again but still looking for accurate info and help. Conversation is with Subsea. And as I said in one of your many other identical posts, remove it if you want, or leave it.
Ok, so I said the same thing he is saying, but i wasn't helpful but he is... ??You are so helpful. Thanks again but still looking for accurate info and help. Conversation is with Subsea.
I’ll have to check that. My guess is it will be spongy but I’ll have to confirm. I have shown it to a couple large LFS in my area and have had conflicting info on ID. Thanks for the help. I’ll also get a better pic.Cryptic sponges are white and they grow in the dark.
Help us help you. Start with a better detail description. Is it calcarious to touch? Is it spongy to touch?
@K9Fish
Not knowing your experience level, I ask you, what do you expect to grow in your first chamber?
Not sure I was a help.I’ll have to check that. My guess is it will be spongy but I’ll have to confirm. I have shown it to a couple large LFS in my area and have had conflicting info on ID. Thanks for the help.
Tremendous help. I do appreciate it. I’m going to get better pics and I also hope this is what I’m seeing in the dark areas on a couple rocks in DT. Is there a concern with these type spongers coming into contact with corals? It’s about 11 months. No diver collected LR. I did bring in a couple smaller rocks from a tank tear down that had several Ricordia mushrooms attached. Not sure I was a help.
Cryptic sponges process DOC (dissolved organic carbon) and POC (particulate organic carbon).
Instead of algae refugium, I use cryptic sponge filtration. Cryptic sponges are 50 fold more efficient at removing DOC than the BEST activated carbon as a chemical removal media. Instead of removing DOC, cryptic sponges recycle it.
Here are a few better pictures. These pics are from my DT, I had to temporarily move a large frogspawn to get these shots. With the frogspawn on the front and then rock structure above this area doesn’t get any direct light. Also, it’s mostly hard calcarious to the touch In the sump and the DT. Are your thoughts the same cryptic sponge? Being in the DT is this still beneficial and should I leave it alone? Thanks again for the help.“Is there a concern with these type spongers coming into contact with corals?”
Because you asked “coming into contact”: marine inhabitants do not need to touch to come into contact. The water they live in is shared with each other.
The exudates of coral is mostly lipets & proteins
and the exudates of algae are mostly glucose.
Exudates/DOC of both coral and algae are consumed by cryptic sponges
