Does anyone know what kind of algae this is? Is it the beginnings of bryopsis?

Bryopsis grows like a fern plant and the best way to remove it other than to manually remove ALL of it INCLUDING the root system is through the use of hydrogen peroxide. This procedure can only be accomplished however, by removing the rock, equipment from the water. Apply the hydrogen peroxide to the root system and let sit for 3-4 minutes, then you can put it back in your tank. The Bryopsis should be gone in about 72 hours. Once killed it will not grow back again UNLESS it is reintroduced into your tank via live rock, coral or frag plug typically.

So it is bryopsis??? it’s only on the glass at this point. Nothing has been added to the tank in 5 weeks except hermits...I guess they are the culprits?

It looks like tiny ferns just waving in the current, I need to get this fixed before it’s out of contro! I was supposed to bring home my first fish today, a blenny...I guess he shall wait.

Just scrape it off and carefully remove all of it. If it’s localized and in an easy location it shouldn’t be terribly hard to extract it.

Thanks for the help coralreefer. I scraped the exposed glass during the water change. it’s slimy and doesn’t really come off with the razor, it’s just kinda slimes into a pile. I feel like I’m just spreading it. Can I use a syringe to squirt with peroxide?

You can but not while it is in water as it needs to soak for a few minutes to kill it. The other thing you can do is while scraping it use a turkey baster to suck it up.
