My tank is still very new and still in the ugly stages. I spent probably 30-45 minutes 4 or 5 times a week, elbow deep in the water with a hemostat plucking out algae. While that hardly makes a dent in it, with how much I'm pulling out, I assume I'm at least somewhat keeping it at bay even if I'm not noticeably reducing it.
Anyway, I seem to have two types of algae going on. I have one that, at least under the lights, is reddish, 1-2 inches long and has pretty much covered every surface that the lights hit. It looks just about the same as someone with thick 1-2 inch long hair with their head underwater. Also, as for it being red 'under the lights', I don't remember off hand if it's green once it's out of the tank and under 'regular' lights. In any case, here's a picture.

The other thing I have going on his some green wirey stuff. It tends to be much longer, maybe 4-6 inches long and doesn't grow in clumps but rather individual filaments here and there and they seem to concentrate near corals. Could be a coincidence.

It should be noted that I haven't prepared a slide or even used a microscope in over 25 years and I only spent 5 minutes getting these pictures. I was just playing with it last night when I got it and was planning to take some better pictures later tonight but these two didn't seem half bad.

Also, it's 100% possible these are mixed up or even both the same thing (though I'm quite sure the second one is the green wirey stuff). Like I said, I was just fooling around last night and this morning happened to notice that some of the pictures turned out okay.
