Yes and no... Once the mats seem to get greater, bubbles are seen...but early on, not always present. I have small cell amphidinium dinos on part of my sand and they show no bubbles at all.

Best way...look through a microscope! Little kid's microscopes work but do make exact identification a bit difficult at times. But, they can tell easily if dinos vs diatoms.

Its diatoms
You will know dino which will look like snot with bubbles and ugly/stringy
For diatoms, check your phosphate and nitrate levels.
