Hello, thanks for any help on this situation. This is my first tank and it has been going well for a while. I have not had great coral growth but have yet to lose a coral. However, I have been dealing with this algae outbreak recently and it's driving me crazy. I initially identified it as dinos as it was very stringy and had bubbles, however, I bought a microscope today, and I no longer feel confident with dinos... It looks like cyano and diatoms under the scope, but all the pictures online look nothing like my tank. Tank is about 5 months old. I am cleaning my glass every 2 days as it is quickly covered. Any advice or identification? Is this ugly stage? I dosed 0.01 phosphate as it was reading zero and I still thought it was dinos. Last tests where 2-4 nitrates 0 phosphate. Over the last couple of weeks I had really strange magnesium tests. At one point it dropped from 1200 to 920 over 2 weeks with water changes. I tested twice and tested fresh mix. I don't think it was a testing fluke. It's back up again after heavy dosing. 400 calcium 8.0 alkalinity. pH is around 8.15. sample was taken from the stringy parts. Dosing microbacte clean and 7 also dosing 1 ml red sea carbon n04 pox. 29 gallons but about 20 gallons total water volume.

Check your nutrient levels.

You are going to need phosphates for .03 to .04 to balance out your nutrients. One can raise the phosphates slowly by feeding dry flakes or frozen.

If this is a newer system, ride it out until you nutrients balance out.
