Curious if anyone knows what this type of algae is? My tank is only a few months old so I know I will have a variety of different types of algae blooms, but I can't seem to find anywhere that has a list with photos and ways to battle specific types of algae. Any info would be appreciated, TIA!

Maggie it look as though you have Green Hair and Red cyan growing. Have you been checked your phosphates and nitrates?

Both are at 0. Checking about 2x a week now. I think they are absorbing the nutrients as fast as I feed the fish. Doing weekly 10% wc's with vacing the sand. Reduced feeding amount and frequency. I realize I was a heavy feeder, wanted to make my fishes happy, I was just making them fat. I'm not feeding heavy anymore. I am now only putting in about 20 mysis shrimp every other day and a 1" nori square. I knew the reddish was cyanobacteria but the green ish algae is a tube and hollow. I am heavily stocked lol. Wow I'm listing all these problems I know I have. Sheesh. 1 mimic tang small 2" lil guy (will be moving to the 200g that's getting set up in the fall). 1- 2" cleaner wrasse also will be moving. 1 goby & pistol shrimp pair. About 7 tiny hermits 6 snails and 2 tux urchins. All that in a 40g with no sump. [emoji16]

What are you testing with? The reason for my question is, when cyano is present your phosphates are a lot higher then most test test. Both algae are consuming the phosphates and nitrates. I did not get a true reading of my phosphates until I purchased a Hanna ultra low phosphorus checker. I alway thought my phosphates were in line:rolleyes:. I brought in a large clean up crew to get rid of my Green Hair and suggest bumping to the crew to on for every gallon. I also use a filter media in my sump to control my nitrates. I found to starve out the cyano by changing my filter socks every other cleaning my skimmer everyday, running GFO. When I found out my phosphates were really high I use a product with lanthanum chloride link to drop my phosphates fast.

After telling you life story, I read that you have a 40 with not sump:D Clean the filtration, use a checker to get a true reading, and the lanthanum Chloride would be a good course. ATM agent green worked best for me;)

I like life stories! I will get a Hanna ultra low. I am using an API kit. And research the lanthanum chloride. Thank you so much! I am glad people are willing g to give advice!

If you have high phosphates i would highly recommend using a reactor with http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/po4x4-phosphate-remover.html that has worked really really well for me keeping them at 0.01 with a Hanna ULR checker, as for nitrates i use biopellets and they take a little while to start working but they eventually keep them low.

just a heads up... if you're running at 0.01ppm of phosphate you should back off a little on the p04x4. the number your hanna produces isn't always the exact truth and doesn't account for the margin of error which could easily be 0.00ppm and starving your coral.
we all don't like algae but you're far better holding between 0.04ppm-0.08ppm.

I have it running very very low the reading i get from ULR vary from 0.04 to 0.01 corals all seem to have full coloration plus i dose amino to make up for the low nutrients.
