Hey all, got some algae growing on my rocks and back of the glass. Attached is a pic of it, lots of air bubbles so I’m assuming it’s diatoms? If anyone could confirm That’d be great! Also read in a few places to keep lights on during this or keep them off so it dies off. In your opinion what should I do!

Diatoms don’t usually house bubbles. Do you have pics under white only?

Diatoms feed on new tanks because of silica (seams and water and sand). Do you have nutrient numbers? Also how old is the tank. Could be a number of things. But can’t tell under blues like that.

That is the whites, phone turns everything blue.. the color in the pic is what it looks like. Tank is 5 days old, only has sand and live rock. Used a bottle of dr tims, took numbers yesterday was like .25 ammonia, ph7.5 , no3 20, no2 .5.

Maybe if you turn out the lights and use your phones flash as the light?
It’s just hard for tell in those pics. The closer the better.
Usually stringy brown snot is dinos, brown dots are diatoms, and red snot is cyano. Usually lol.

I hope these are better! Those are all air bubbles on the larger section of it

Am I finally getting old? I still can’t ID that picture
Well, here’s a good way to tell, if you have a turkey baster or long pipet. Can you blow them off? If so, and it’s brown, dinos. If red, cyano. If you can’t blow it off and it’s brown it’s likely diatoms. If you can’t blow if off and green, good ol new tank algae.
If both phos and nitrate are at zero, it’s likely dinos or cyano. There’s tons of threads on it. If that was all dry rock (even the purple rock that comes dry) then it’s likely Dinos. Diatoms don’t hold bubbles.
I started a completely dry nano as a challenge to myself and boy was that hard. I got everything all at once but I was able to counter it all thankfully.
