There will probably be some mixed opinions on this. I've seen and heard of people going both ways.
my LFS (more of hobbyist store rather than your standard LFS) leaves his alone and has no issues, so i will be running mine the same way.
some feel its best to thoroughly clean the sand and others have had theirs for 10+ years untouched.

Hmm sounds good I researched people doing both as well just wanted to get a few extra pointers from people with experience thanks for the input

no problem.

a lot of people feel that it creates "toxic" pockets that can be released into the water column. based on what I've seen, I've chosen to leave mine alone due to another person success with it. which could be great, or disastrous for me, only time will tell. lol

in a bed that deep leave it. Pretty soon you should have worms that will eat it. IMO vacuum a shallow. nature takes care of a dsb.
FWIW for aesthetics, I run a 2" strip of cloth tape along the bottom of my tank so i dont see it.

fwiw I ran a 3" dsb in my 30 gal non sumped tank for four years with no problem's. after about a year it started to let off occasional bubbles. Nitrogen.

most folks only read report and remember the bad stuff. Just make sure you have burrowing worms and snails.

If it doesn't give you any problems leave it.
I never touch my sand bed fish, snails, worms and counch is doing the work for me.

If aesthetically you want to clean below the surface on the front glass its fine to do so. That amount of disturbance biologically of doing so is negligable. There is a higher risk of scratching the tank though.

I don't really mind the look of the sand I just think the goby is a cool fish I just don't want him to starve and create a mess and also take away the point of having live sand in the setup
