I have a system thats has been established going on 10 months. The main rock in this tank has been cycling in a brute trash can for about 3 months prior to the entire tank being set up.

About 3 months ago, I introduced a piece of marco dry rock that I wanted to supplement my existing rock and add some more territory for frags. After having the rock sit in my refugium for about a month I moved it into my DT.

Since moving it into my DT it has exploded with an algae that is not on any other rock or found anywhere else in the tank. Its a thick mat of web like algae that traps bubbles (I do not believe its creating the bubbles itself.)

The rock gets decent flow, nitrates are <5 if detectable at all of phosphate is around .03. Lighting is 2 A360's that ramp up in color and intensity through out the day and back down total lighting period is 12 hours however the early morning and late night are very low ramps.

My algae eating blennies and urchins wont touch it even though they scrub clean most other rock surfaces. I've resorted to this weekend taking the rock out and giving it a scrub to help battle the issue but I know its just a stop gap.

Anyone out there know what this is or have a better suggestion?

No expert here ! could be wrong. looks like cyano bacteria maybe . Vacuum it off the rock. it should come right off. maybe a tooth brush as you siphon . it may come back .lots of peeps deal with this .

I had wondered about that, specifically because of 1 the color and 2 the refusal of any of my algae grazers to eat on it but I'm just surprised it has not spread if it is infact cyano.

The stuff can grow out of control or just stay in patches like you . Mine was in patches also. I just kept vacuming & scrubbing with a tooth brush it finally clears up.
