Not sure how to start this off.

I started dosing vinegar to get my nitrates down. I was somewhere around 25-50 with a Salifert test for quite some time. I was doing 5 gallon WCs on a 60g w a 10g sump pretty regularly on a weekly basis, sometimes, but rarely, going every two weeks if I was busy. This wasn't doing anything for my nitrates, so the vinegar was introduced. Useing my GHL doser I started the regimen found on reefkeeping magazine. I should be on, what I think is week 7 but, since week 5 I got lazy and didn't update my dosing schedule. Somewhere around the end of week 1 to the end of week 2 I got a decent amount of cyano growing on my overflow. It's progressively gotten a little stringerier yet still manageable but still something isn't right.

Just tested and I'm at:
8.8 Alk - Hanna
440 Ca - Salifert
0 PO4- Hanna
0 NO3 - Salifert
1440 Mg - Salifert

Dosing cal/alk/vigegar on a lightly stocked mixed reef.

Alk is up a bit from my 8.3-8.5 level. Ca is always around 440. Nitrates have gone from the 25-50 range down to 10 after 2-3 weeks of dosing carbon but now down to 0. I've never had a reading above 0 for my phosphates which has me puzzled and
my mg is typically around 1350-1450. About a month ago I bumped up my mag in hopes of saving a chalice.

I've got a bubble algae issue that isn't lining up with my numbers, based off my limited knowledge and was looking for some sort of insight on what I could do or what I'm doing wrong.

Lighting wasn't mentioned. I'm running a A360W on a P4 which unfortunately has been an issue for me since I can't figure out the programming 100%. I was on a 12hr schedule but somehow managed to get on a 13hr schedule and can't figure out how to change what I need to. (Selerate post coming on that ) My bubble algae was an issue prior to my lighting schedule

Sorry for the long incohesive post. Frustrated and confused.

Carbon dosing is known to cause cyano growth. Your 0 test results for PO4 and NO3 are because the algae or cyano is pulling it from the water column. I would try gfo if you arent already. Also maybe lowering the amount of vinegar you are dosing

Are you running any gfo? Id use rowaphos. Thats the only gfo that made a difference with algae for my tank. Ive used bulk gfo, didnt do anything and seachem phosgaurd also didnt do anything. What test for phos?

Thank you both!

I'm pulling back to week 4 levels of carbon come Sunday. I'm passively running BRS GFO. Have a reactor that I took off line that I could reintroduce it space is at a premium.

Hanna is my testing method for phosphate.

Sounds good. Is it the high capacity or regular gfo?

Id look into some algae predators if you cant get rid of it.

BRS high capacity.

I picked up an emerald the other day. Thinking I'll add another 1-2 and hopefully that will do the trick. Then I'll look into trading or giving one or two away since I'm not the biggest fans of them and don't won't them going hungry and deciding to go after my corals.

I'm still a bit confused as to why I'm having these outbreaks. I'm assuming the bubble was prior to my nutrients reading zero but the cyano isn't making sense to me.

Also concerned about nitrates and phosphates both at zero.

I've never had a reading above .000 for phosphates via the Hanna since I've had it which is about 6mo.

I'm assuming the nitrates are due to the carbon. Once I was getting a reading of 5 I started feeding a bit heavier to ensure I didn't get to this point but that seemed to fail.

Also plan on getting my alk down in the 7.5-8.0 range given my nutrient readings.

Guess I'll continue to monitor and adjust everything as we always have to do in our hobby.
