I have a client with a large saltwater aquarium, filled with tons of decorations. All these decorations are white and need to stay white. The tank was started nine months ago and was unable to sustain life until I added some live rock to the sump recently. Since then, all of their white rock and shells have developed a brown coating of algae. I need to figure out a way to return their now brown decor back to white, without constantly scrubbing them down. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!!!

Its diatoms and is something that will go away only on it's own as the rock cycles. No amount of scrubbing will make them go away on your end, just have to wait or out.

I’ve went through this process before. My clients are not willing to wait for the algae to go away. I have to get it back to white as fast as possible.

Perhaps they should try a freshwater tank then.

Do you believe that there are some products on the market that may help speed up the process, such as Turbo Start? I’m not exactly sure why the cycling process is occurring now, since the tank is 9 months old

wouldnt running gfo help use up the silicates in the water that causes brown diatoms

That’s actually a great idea! I was also thinking of making a refugium, to help get rid excess nitrates and phosphates. Would a refugium benefit getting rid of the algae?
