i have algae on my corals what causes this ? is it too much nutrients ? not enough flow? too much light?

Light and nutrients are the key cuplrits. You can lower white light intensity, and amount of hours lights are on.
If tank is at or near a window- you will be battling this forever
Adding smaller cleaners will help control such as:
astrea snails
Carribean blue leg hermits which are tiny
chiton snails

Adding Liquid vibrant at 80% of recommended dosage

Can you provide a pic or two under white lighting ?

I assume you mean the algae is on the frag plug or rock. If it is actually "on" the coral, then that part of the coral was already dead and the algae grew on the dead part.
If you are asking about algae in general and why it is growing in your tank, please look at the sticky threads and/or do a search as there is a wealth of information already on these forums.
Good luck :)

ok so thats what i though the coral is dying. im not sure whats going on the only coral that thrives in my tank is zoa, gsp, zenia and leathers. everything else dies off. the tank is only about 9 months old so that may be why .

What kinds of coral have you added that die? Age alone wouldn't be a reason for LPS/SPS failures. What is your tanks average water parameters?

the corals that have dies were basically anything encrusting and anything sps and candy canes start off fine and then die off

also still struggling with finding correct light settings its a waterbox100.3 with 2 hydra 32s

Yeah, first guess would be lighting (not the lights themselves as I've heard hydras are fine lights), so could be not bright enough. What do you have going for flow? SPS in particular need very high lighting AND flow.

Parameters look fine tho many reefers (more experienced than me) might say 0 nitrate/phos is not ideal. Do they seem to just bleach and recede over time? Or is immediate die off?

i have 2 reef breeder rpms one on each end the sps bleached out right away , the candy canes receed over time the i have a torch that is doing well, a hammer is doing somewhat ok and a frogsspawn that did great for a few months and now doesnt open much

Hmm weird. I'm not a stick guy so I can't really help you there. For the LPS I find that moderate lighting and flow works great. Outside of that I'd increase nutrients and just look for swings in the big three minerals.

Coral needs nitrate and phosphate in order to live. The easiest way to increase these nutrients is to feed your fish more (if you have no fish, still add some food - either fish food or coral food).
