I am having this algae problem. Not sure if its the light setting or maybe I need 2 of these lights, but the areas that do not directly get light doesn’t have algae. It’s about a 33 gallon tank about 1 year old. I have checked the water using API testing kit! I am located in southern Ca. I have attached photos.

Welcome to R2R.
What’s 12 months old? The donut?
What else is in there?
Yes, algae don’t like the dark.

How deep is your tank and how far from the water is the light ?
the light is about 11 inches from the water. The tank is about 18 inches deep. Due to a recent high temps in Los Ángeles and my AC being on I think I stressed the few fish I had and they died! Too much fluctuations in the water temp. I think I need to invest in a chiller. Besides that I purchase my water from the fish store.

Being from the UK, I know nothing about high aquarium temperatures so can’t help, sorry.

Currently there isn’t anything in the tank except crabs. My prediction is the fish died due to stress! We had a recent heat wave in LA and the water was too warm. When I turned the AC on the temp dropped back down to 79.

Pics are dark from heavy blue lights to clearly see your tank.3
What is your phosphate level?
Are you using any tap water or all RODI ?
Is tank at or near a window?

Try this:

cool white 18
royal blue 70
violet 75
UV 85
red 4
Green 4
Deep blue 80

phosphate levels seems to be within parameters. I will try your recommendation for the light. RODI is all that I use. No, it’s not next to a window however there is a door and window in the room. The room isn’t the darkest is what I’m trying to say. I try to keep it as dark as possible however when the door is open it does get some Sun light but not directly.

What is the standard height for the light?
The height you have it at, combined with the tank depth is fine. Your light intensity looks okay too.

It just might be too much for how mature your tank is. I would lower it until the algae subsides, and to help it I would feed less (unless you already don’t feed much) and make sure to have a good CUC.

It will takes many weeks to fix but you’ll get there. This hobby takes time.
